Macron Gains Heavyweight Backing

Former Socialist Prime Minister Manuel Valls has lent his backing to independent centrist Emmanuel Macron’s presidential campaign.

Editor’s Remarks: The move made ideological sense for Valls, who is more at home in the pro-business wing of the Socialist Party which he shared with Macron before the now-leading candidate made his break to go it alone. Though his avowed intention is purely to vote for Macron so as to keep Marine Le Pen out of office, not to campaign for him, it sets the stage for a dramatic shift in France’s post election politics: many of the 50 or so socialist politicians who have backed Macron will face a complicated choice over whether to throw themselves back into a party whose left-wing leadership has decried them as opportunists.

What to watch: Benoît Hamon, Emmanuel Macron, Manuel Valls, Marine Le Pen
