Citizens from Morocco are the single-largest foreign-born community inside the European Union. According to information collected from Eurostat’s 2011 EU census, 2.29m people from Morocco were living inside the 28 nations that comprise the bloc. This meant that 0.5% of the population of the EU was born in the North African kingdom. There was also a large number of Turkish people living in Europe at just over 2m as well as Russians and Algerians at 1.81m and 1.51 respectively. According to the census, the biggest concentration of Moroccans living in Europe was in France although it was proportionally higher in Belgium. The EU-wide census is conducted every ten years.
