On Tuesday, millions of people around the world watched live streams of Elon Musk’s SpaceX launching its first Falcon Heavy rocket – the most powerful vehicle since NASA’s Space Shuttle programme, which was discontinued in 2011. The Falcon Heavy is able to carry double the payload of its closest competitor, the United Launch Alliance’s Delta IV Heavy but at just a third of its cost. The Falcon Heavy has been incessantly compared with another heavy-duty rocket, the Saturn V, which carried the famous Apollo astronauts to the moon and had well over seven million pounds of thrust at liftoff. Many are now looking to SpaceX and its growing pack of competitors to herald a new age of space travel.
