Editor’s Remarks:
Use of virtual reality (VR) devices is set to keep rising at speed after dramatic growth over the last year. The industry has boomed thanks to accessibly-priced entertainment-oriented VR headsets from the likes of Samsung, as well as breakthrough high-end versions such as Facebook’s Oculus Rift. VR is popular in the gaming world, particularly among the hordes of developers using open-source software to make smaller independent games. The market is still awaiting its big-hitting titles, though, with Playstation VR not releasing until October and Samsung’s affordable Gear VR offering only a few apps so far – so huge growth is still to come. VR is also finding increasing professional use in fields such as architecture and medicine. From just 5.9 million in 2015, the number of VR users jumped to 43 million in 2016, and is forecast to reach 171 million by 2018. It is big business, now, too: revenue from VR products (both hardware and software) reached $3.8bn last year – light-years away from a humble $90m in 2014.
