Continuing his campaign against the perceived damage US industry takes from cheap Chinese imports, US President Donald Trump said he would introduce tariffs on steel imports. However, according to statistics published by the US Department of Commerce, Canada exports over 5.6m metric tonnes of steel to America, making it the country’s biggest importer. China was 11th on the list, having only exported 740,126 tonnes: 13% of what the USA’s northern neighbour sent across the border. According to the new regulations, which will be imposed this week, all steel products will be subjected to a 20% tariff and a 10% charge will be levied on all aluminium.
