Universal Music has signed a licensing agreement with Chinese internet group Tencent.
Editor’s Remarks: Universal’s latest move will enable it to stream music to China and follows similar decisions by Warner Music and Sony, who have also partnered with Tencent. Universal’s music will now be distributed across Tencent’s streaming services – QQ Music, KuGou and KuWo. The Chinese conglomerate has also been instrumental in clamping down on the nation’s piracy problem, which has subsequently encouraged western music groups to expand their presence there. More than half a billion Chinese use smartphones, and Universal is clearly eager to capitalise on the opportunity this presents.
