Twitter may be Donald Trump’s favourite means of communicating with the world, but the social networking and microblogging company seems to have hit a plateau in terms of monthly active users. While Facebook continues to add new users quarter on quarter, most recently topping 2bn, Twitter reported 328m active users in its most recent earnings release, with no growth over the previous quarter, and advertising revenues for the still loss-making company were down 8% year on year. There is a clear disconnect between Twitter’s continued importance as a medium for news transmission and its ability to monetise this influence and grow advertising revenues. Most of the world’s politicians and celebrities use the medium as their primary communication platform, but Twitter is still struggling to find its financial raison d’être.
