Editor’s Remarks:
Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States may not have been the most-watched in history – that prize goes to Ronald Reagan’s first swearing-in in 1981, perhaps surprisingly given Barack Obama’s star power – but it has probably drawn more controversy over the metrics than any other.
After Trump’s less-than-enthusiastic reaction to media reports of low turnout at the ceremony, his press secretary Sean Spicer said, “This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration – period – both in person and around the globe.” After press outlets continued to challenge Team Trump’s account, Kellyanne Conway (who holds the glittering brief of Counselor to the President) followed with her now-infamous retort that they possess “alternative facts”. Perhaps the truth will never be known as to whether 1.5m attendees really were somewhere before Trump’s lectern that day, but The Market Mogul’s chart is not favourable to Spicer’s assertions when it comes to TV viewership.
