Trump Could Still Dump NAFTA

President Trump has dropped a plan to pull out of NAFTA, but warned he could still “terminate” it if renegotiations don’t end up in a “fair deal”.

Editor’s Remarks: He said he had been prepared to give formal notice of America’s withdrawal from the North American Free Trade Agreement as soon as “two or three days from now”, but that he decided against it following discussions with Canada and Mexico. Trump seemed to straddle the line between his America First vision and a practically-minded view of international trade, saying on the one hand that he would terminate NAFTA if unable to make “a fair deal for [America’s] workers and … companies”, on the other that pulling out would be a “pretty big shock to the system”, referring to the $1trn in annual trade that the deal covers.
