Rex Tillerson Is Sacked as Secretary of State by Trump

 2 min read /

Donald Trump has sacked his Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson.

Posted on Twitter, the President’s favourite means of communication, Trump announced the news at just before 08:00 EST. Tillerson will be replaced with Mike Pompeo, the Director of the CIA who in turn, will be replaced with Gina Haspel, who will become the first woman to serve in the role.

According to the Washington Post, Trump had asked Tillerson to stand down on Friday of last week

Further details behind Trump’s decision to sack Tillerson, who has served as Secretary of State since the beginning of his administration, is as yet unknown.

Following the Skripal attack in the UK, Rex Tillerson had announced that the US would stand with “its closest ally” as the British government investigated the use of a nerve agent in an assassination attempt on a former MI6 agent. In a marked rift from the President, Tillerson explicitly stated that Russia was behind the attack.

Tillerson, who had previously been the Chairman of the American oil and gas company, ExxonMobil, had reportedly wanted to resign in the summer and had labelled Trump a “moron” following a meeting with the President’s national security team.

The Trump administration has had one of the highest turnovers of staff compared to any other Presidency on record. Just last week, the President’s Economic Advisor, Gary Cohn, resigned following his refusal to drop his objections to the steel and aluminium tariffs.

Other prominent casualties include the Chief Strategist, Steve Bannon, Deputy Director of the FBI, Andrew McCabe, and the White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer. Donal Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor, Jared Kushner, had his security clearance downgraded at the end of February

Pompeo was appointed Director of the CIA in early January of last year. Before he can assume official duties he will first have to gain confirmation by the Senate.
