It has been a bruising couple of weeks for the GOP, and this is beginning to seriously impact the approval ratings of Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, and Majority Leader of the Senate Mitch McConnell. Donald Trump “crossed the aisle”, to the consternation of leading Republicans, to get Democrat support for a bill raising the US government debt ceiling two weeks ago. He then continued his new bipartisan approach by having dinner with Democrat leaders to discuss a deal over DACA ((Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and tax reform. Ryan and McConnell have already been damaged by the Republicans’ inability to pass a coherent healthcare bill, and Trump’s latest moves can only underline their apparent impotence in the eyes of the public. Tax reform is next on the agenda, but in the absence of legislative wins, these are tough times for Republicans.
