Russian President Vladimir Putin enjoys domestic approval ratings that are the envy of any Western leader. Whatever one’s views of the Russian strongman’s politics, it is hard to deny that his popularity is genuine – especially when it comes to defending the international interests of an increasingly nationalist Russia. Our chart today shows his approval ratings on a number of issues, and although they remain at pretty decent levels, he is losing support across the board. His handling of relations with China, the US and Europe still seems to receive broad-based approval but opinions of his handling of relations with the Ukraine needs to be looked at. The real Achilles heel is the economy and corruption, where approval ratings have dropped to 55% and 49% respectively, and as any politician knows it is these bread and butter issues that tend to resonate loudest. Something to discuss with Donald Trump, who’s ratings languish at 35%, when they meet this week?
