As Microsoft confirms it is buying GitHub for $7.5bn, now is an apt time to re-examine some of the company’s largest acquisitions. Back in 2016, Microsoft bought LinkedIn – its biggest ever acquisition – for a huge $26.2bn. Since then, LinkedIn’s membership has grown from 400 million to over 560 million, though it has managed to retain its individual identity. Notably, Microsoft also bought Skype in 2011 for $8.5bn, which soon replaced Microsoft’s dated Windows Live Messenger and Microsoft Lync. Interestingly, Microsoft also owns Mojang, the company behind the immensely popular Minecraft.
