Editor’s remarks:
Annual expenditure on newspapers in the United Kingdom has been decreasing such that in 2014 UK households spent £2 billion less on newspapers than in 2005. Print newspapers have seen revenues go from bad to worse after a temporary surge following the EU referendum. The Guardian reported full-year operating losses of £69 million in September and the industry as a whole fell by £135 million in 2016. This is due to the advertising switch from print to online disruptors such as Facebook and Google. Newspapers must look to move their content online or onto smartphones where the consumers are now located, but they face a tough mature market when they get there.
