Initiative Targets French Fake News

CrossCheck, which involves Google, Facebook, and several media giants, will tackle fake news during France’s presidential election.

Editor’s Remarks: The project will see journalists from Agence France-Presse (AFP), Le Monde, and around fifteen other media organisations given training and tech tools from Google Trends to Facebook’s CrowdTangle in order to identify online hoaxes and false claims. It comes as internet giants have faced calls to toughen up on the issue – in Germany, for example, Facebook has come under repeated pressure from the Government, and is now being sued by a Syrian refugee for allegedly failing to do enough over images incorrectly linking him to terrorist incidents.

What to watch: AFP, First Draft News, Google, Facebook, Emmanuel Macron, Marine Le Pen
