It’s been an incredible 12 months for women. From the Time’s Up movement, which gave a voice to all those who needed to speak, to having female leaders negotiating the outcome of some of the world’s crucial political and economic events of our time.
It took a long time for the world to get here.
Still, there is so much more to do. If you are like me, you will have heard it all – from “you need to have more feminine hobbies” (I did karate) to “this is a serious conversation, let the men deal with it” (yet, I never did). And it all starts early on.
The way we educate our daughters today will define what tomorrow looks like for the whole world.
I’ve never really played with dolls – my dad taught me to build little machines and dream of the stars. “There is no second place,” he said – and that helped me so much throughout my career! Him guiding me through life not as if I were a girl, but as though I was being taught how to be a leader, really made all the difference in the world.
I had dolls, just as I had access to his toolbox whenever I wanted to take apart our radio. I had that choice, and it defined who I am. In the workplace, I’ve always been a journalist, or an editor, or a client relationship manager. Never the female version of those words.
I’m telling you this because, throughout all of it, the men supporting the female movement have been instrumental in helping us achieve our many goals. We have a long way to go – and we will get there by not only supporting each other but by also have the great men of our time – whether they are our fathers, brothers, sons or friends – walk with us.
So please join me in saying a heartfelt “Happy belated International Women’s Day” to our mothers (hi, mum!), our great female friends, our cherished Authors, and all those great women out there who change lives each and every day.
And to the men who have stood by us: thank you. You too are a part of this wonderful journey.
