Trader’s remarks: Carats are the traditional measure of weight for diamonds and pearls—each carat is a unit of mass equal to 200 milligrams. The polished diamond market surged during the global financial crisis when buyers sought out jewellery as a safe investment, and prices reached a record in the summer of 2011. But they have largely fallen since then. The global stock market slump hit discretionary spending and jewellery demand in China due to a clampdown on luxury gift-giving and the slowdown in the world’s second-biggest economy.
