Editor’s Remarks:
If you were to ask the Australian Olympians, the biggest concern for athletes is not who they are up against but the water, air and streets they are competing in. Although doping has dominated the headlines leading up to the event, the offenders are caught several years afterwards. And although police were necessary to stop protestors in the midst of the country’s worst ever recession from disrupting the torch relay, the main issues appear to be all about health and infrastructure. Regardless of the mosquito repellent suits, sprays, warnings to shower and avoid drinking certain water sources, the poor performance of Missy Franklin due to focusing on avoiding being bitten rather than her race or Usain Bolt getting indigestion the night before he runs will surely ruin the games. No amount of pushing the camera in the right direction away from the sewage or police temporarily quieting the kidnapping drug gangs will stop that.
