Alibaba’s Oscillating Net Income

In the fiscal year ending 31st March 2018, Alibaba posted a 47% boost in annual net income, driven largely by an influx of mobile and tablet-based sales. There was also a 60% increase in its top line, with revenues in excess of RNB130bn. Alibaba is also experimenting with traditional brick-and-mortar partnerships in order to bring about a new model of data-driven commerce. The move is similar to Amazon’s own efforts to break into the physical retail space via its Whole Foods acquisition last year. Alibaba is also gearing up for the IPO of its subsidiary Ant Financial later this year, which is expected to be valued as high as $100bn.
