Alibaba has announced that it is bringing its cloud computing business into India to meet increasing demand for cloud computing services among SMEs.
It will be opening its first data centre in the country next month. Although the business already has clients in India, it wants to serve customers better, which a local presence will allow it to do. Indian customers will get access to elastic computing, storage and content delivery, analytics and big data, database, networking, middleware, containers and security.
Simon Hu, Senior Vice President of Alibaba Group and President of Alibaba Cloud, said:
“As we build out the Alibaba Cloud network globally, India is another important piece that is now firmly in place.”
Alibaba Cloud now has 33 availability zones across the world. Coverage extends across China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, the US and India.
It hit net sales of RMB 3bn ($447m) in the most recent quarter. This increased from RMB 2.4bn in the previous quarter, when the company reached one million customers.
Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant, has been focussing on India generally. It invested in Indian payment and e-commerce firm Paytm, helping it to push into digital banking services.
