Apple’s Machine Learning Push

The Apple Machine Learning Journal has been launched after the tech giant has been criticised for falling behind in the field.

Editor’s Remarks: Google’s Deep Mind has been taking the lead in machine learning recently, but Apple knows it needs to step up to the plate in a key technology that will be crucial for virtual personal assistants, self-drive cars and smartwear. The new Journal will publish research papers by Apple engineers looking into new applications and techniques in the field, and support the development of products that will benefit from machine learning research. Google, Amazon and Facebook have been publishing their research in the area for a long time and have massive amounts of customer data to work with. But Apple has been more focused on hardware, with only a fraction of the data, and seems to be starting to look at content in order to step up to the AI plate.
